Karuppu Box Office: Suriya’s Biggest Hit Crosses ₹300 Crore Worldwide

June 24, 2026

Karuppu, the fantasy action drama directed by RJ Balaji, has proved one of the standout commercial successes of the Tamil calendar this year. Released worldwide on 15 May 2026, the film became the highest-grossing Tamil film of 2026 and the highest-grossing film of Suriya’s career.

Karuppu set the highest opening-weekend record for a Tamil-language film in 2026 and the second-highest of Suriya’s own career.

The film opened to strong numbers and only built from there. It grossed nearly ₹15.50 crore net on its opening day in India, with a global opening-day gross of approximately ₹29 crore.

Momentum held firmly through the opening fortnight. The film surpassed ₹100 crore at the global box office within days of release, and one week in, the makers announced that it had crossed ₹100 crore in Tamil Nadu alone, by which point the worldwide gross had reached ₹200 crore. A notable career milestone followed for its leading man. Karuppu became the first Suriya film to cross ₹200 crore in India, and outperformed Singam II to become his highest grosser.

The longer run consolidated those gains. By the end of four weeks, the film had grossed ₹223 crore domestically, including ₹175 crore in Tamil Nadu, and ₹304 crore worldwide. Later tracking placed the worldwide gross at around ₹309.80 crore, comprising an India gross of ₹228.65 crore and overseas earnings of ₹81.15 crore.

The commercial triumph came despite a divided critical reception. Reviews ranged from mixed to positive, with several critics praising its courtroom drama while questioning its turn towards divine spectacle. Tamil Nadu remained, throughout, the film’s strongest territory.
